Name: Raine Sage
Game from: Tales of Symphonia
Age: Possibly several years beyond her appearance, which is roughly twenty-seven.
Race: Half-elf
Gender: Female
Alliance: Crisis Crusaders
Personality: Raine is, perhaps, a born teacher. Because of this, she lectures, though doesn’t bother to when it involves someone who refuses to listen, as she believes that to be a waste of breath. She is also very curious and tries her best to wrap her head around any situation, thinking it through meticulously and about the long term effects it can have. She is very good at making hypotheses, and is a bit of a skeptic, often distrustful and not very gullible, making her somewhat hard to get close to. The latter could attribute to all the years of apprehension that someone might turn on her and her family because they were half-elves and their parents. Even so, once a person has earned that trust, she treats them with respect and kindness.
At times, she says things that come off rather coldly, though it’s only just the truth. She isn’t going to sugarcoat anything, and is very perceptive of others. Though, sometimes, despite her coolheaded profile, she can explode when pushed a little too far, and she also becomes enraptured when faced with ruins of any culture or when she realizes what Noishe is, the latter of which she tried to dissect. When this happens, she becomes what Collete describes as 'maniac' and will expect you (if you happen to be one of her students) to state the historical background of whatever ruin. New findings, however, seem to be much worse... she gets excited over them easily.
History: Before Raine was born, her father came to the Eleven village of Heimdall as a missionary of the King. While there he met and fell in love with an elf woman, Virginia. He soon abandoned his mission for the King to take up residence in the Ymir forest, where he and Virginia would meet in secret, as their love was forbidden. They knew this, yet they continued to do what was considered taboo. Raine was the result of that taboo.
Raine lived in Heimdall until she was seven, so she remembers little of the place where elves lived in harmony with the earth. It was at that age that missionaries of the King came, like her father before, to the village. They were in pursuit of a half-elf, though it was not Raine, and once they caught him, he told of Virginia and her affair with a human and her Halfling child who was spawned from it. They executed that half-elf, who was accused of deception of the Tethe’alla caste system by posing as a full-blooded elf. The missionaries told the Pope of what the Half-elf said, and he would’ve issued the same treatment as he had with the one before her—for he was the one whom managed half-elf affairs—had not the Sybak Institution intervened. From the report that was given, this mere child was a prodigy! They simply had to get their hands on her. The Pope agreed, albeit begrudgingly, as Raine hadn’t actually deceived anyone about her heritage, it was her parents who’d done that.
Meanwhile, the family of three was banished from Heimdall. With news of the Papal Knights soon to be on their heels after Raine and a cruel world of prejudice against them, they traveled from place to place, rarely finding refuge and most commonly finding hate and betrayal. At one point, they had to travel on a boat across the sea during a storm, during which Raine fell overboard, leading to her fear of water and inability to swim. It was also during this time that Genis was born, when she was thirteen, and the family was scared; the Papal Knights were drawing ever nearer.
Soon, her mother heard news in Altamira of the Otherworldly Gate; a place where on a full moon a person could enter the legendary world of Sylvarant, a place where surely half-elves could live in peace. Virginia and her husband discussed in thoroughly, and decided it was all they could do now. And so, on the aforementioned night, her mother took Raine her and a toddler Genis to the Gate. She told them to stay there, because they’d find a place where they wouldn’t have to run anymore, wouldn’t have to fear being betrayed, wouldn’t ever have to hear the metal clink of armor from the Papal Knights. Then, Virginia left. Raine held Genis tight, and the cold was beginning to set in. She called for her mother, her father, anyone. Then, Raine thought for sure this was it, her parents were finally tired of the burden that she and Genis brought. Then, she grew angry; it wasn’t their fault they were born this way. Finally, she was sad; did all those years of running to protect them add up to nothing, to abandonment? As she contemplated this, the moon’s rays kissed the spot where she and Genis sat, creating the portal that lead to Sylvarant. She lost conscious as she passed through the dimensional barriers, scattering her memories of her thirteen years so that they lay in her mind like broken, dull fragments of a mirror.
But even in Sylvarant there was discrimination, and the two found it easier to lie about their heritage rather than admit to it. As her brother grew up, he more or less took care of her when concerning household chores, like cooking and cleaning. Raine decided to become a teacher; though she’d never had the proper education for it she passed the test for a teaching license. In the Village of Oracles, Iselia, she and Genis found a haven at last, though perhaps the sudden forming of a Raine fan club by the students wasn’t exactly what she had in mind.
Life, however, took one of many more turns when the day of prophecy came…
