The outbreak was all over the news one morning. Governments trying to tell us to get to safety bunkers they had constructed. Not only did this tell me that these zombies had been a previous engagement, but my instinct told me the world was anticipating this. Those rare of us to get out of our houses alive kept phones, radios, whatever on hand to try and contact the outside world. Eventually, seven of us managed to meet up. Our world was about to change.
Jeremy was the first person I met up with. He had just witnessed his friends turn into the enemy, and had to get rid of them himself. Probably an emotionally disturbing task, considering he had no gun. He had to bludgeon them with the crowbar he had on hand. He and I joined up, found an abandoned store for collectors, and picked up a sword for him. I had my Viscerator and my katana.
The next we met was Bri, as Jeremy and I insisted we look for her. Being my sister and his lover, it was important all around. We eventually found her, quite holding her own against a horde. She had somehow gotten her hands on a rifle. Lever action .22 classical. A hunting rifle. She was injured, but only from tripping during a run to get to her current position. We set up a camp there until she healed.
Next, we received a call from Chris, saying that our friend Amanda was on top of an old building with a shotgun. Not only was a shotgun useless from up there, but they were generally a bad idea due to the splatter effect. Chris was the one I was more concerned with, as his medical conditions wouldn't let him last very long. Sadly, I was right. We left a memorial by the house, saved Amanda, and carried on.
Lilly of all people was apparently on her way into the States at that point. We met up with her a year after the outbreak forced us from home. I was the only one who knew her, so it was complicated explaining why she was coming to the States. Eventually, she pointed out that she passed a hunting store on the way to us, which is why she had a pistol. Not only was this excellent news, but it led us to our first still human enemy.
A large man with a lawn mower was grinding up bodies of anyone who came near him. Apparently, he was guarding his own crew of people. While I questioned in my head why he wouldn't take a gun and ammunition to be a guard, I didn't want to give him ideas. He was defending the store across the street. A convenience store with plenty of canned food and probably a vast amount of unsiphoned gas. We decided to suit up and take them over.
Now, in most hostile environments, usually all the living humans would band together. But these guys were psychotic. They refused to let us take any of the gas or food. With our own rations dropping, we marched in, and tore them down. Only one of them was okay with this. My sister Sara. Apparently, she joined them because they had food and shelter, but really didn't like them at all. She joined us because we had their food, and the gas in the pumps.
I'm not entirely sure how, but this entourage of people found a car and made it run. Using the gas, we drove to the largest place we could think of that had thick walls and very little visibility to the outside world; A parking garage. With 6 foot walls made of at least 2 foot thick solid concrete, several floors, and extremely open space, it was perfect for a fortress. Bri and I started to train those who were in our group in weapon safety, as well as various forms of how to break free of grapples.
Jeremy kept our calendar updated, as well as kept watch for help on the rooftop. Amanda was apparently a medical assistant, and a very handy paramedic. The first floor off the ground was cut slightly, layered, and stacked awkwardly. A makeshift mound of concrete now 6 feet deep connected the first and second floors, and was hollowed out for growing food. Another spot on the top floor was kept exclusively for gathering rain water and storing any water we already had.
Lilly and Sara took it upon themselves to do pretty much any job that wasn't already taken. Cooking, night watch, and so forth. Our entertainment came from some old board games and for a while, a shakily made pool table out of some of the concrete slabs in front of parking spaces. Everything went absolutely flawlessly for three years. With the first floor gone and hollowed out, the undead couldn't get to us, and there was no way up to us that other survivors could reach.
We did have to come and go sometimes, to make emergency water runs. For this, we constructed a rope ladder. We always traveled in sets of two, as nobody would leave our camp alone, ever. During that final year, we had complications. One of our walls collapsed on the fourth floor. Sara was leaning on it and almost fell. If not for Bri, she would have been devoured. The water container broke open and flooded our rooftops, so our help signal was destroyed. Our crops were not sprouting, probably due to over-harvesting.
All around, we had to evacuate our fortress. one of us made an escape plan because we thought it would never come down to that, but it had. Bri, Amanda and I took front assault, while Sara and Jeremy kept the rear guarded. Lilly had become one hell of a sniper, and she stayed in the rooftops. We never once questions how she kept meeting up with us, but every place we reached, she was there.
Eventually, we found our way to the ocean, and set off in the yacht that was docked. This is where our story ends, with all of us looking back at the shore, and our undead casters off. We turn forward, and await whatever fate throws at us.
