Small excerpt from my story. Erm... if it doesn't make sense, that's all right. Really.
"She's got nothing to do with this, you bastard!"
"HA! See, punk, that's where you're wrong! I need both of you to die for this to work!"
Shin grunted in pain as he was slammed into a wall, barely able to pull Keiune up in time when Enzai slammed into him hard, actually denting the Core's mysterious walls. In a fierce moment, he shoved the undead boy off him, pushing against the wall hard to give him some momentum when he charged his old rival.
"I already told you, you can have me, but leave her out of it!"
They locked again, Enzai's dagger managing to fend against Shin's scythe well. The blond had to jump back when the bastard undead turned into his mist form and attempted to choke him, shooting out icicles from Keiune and hopping into the air.
"Tch! Get back down here!"
Something ripped through his wings, drawing out a cry from him. Shin looked to see Enzai had pierced through with his mist, creating and sending out ice wolves at his enemy before he was forced to land harshly.
He might have stood a chance if Sasha had been awake; but she wasn't, and Shin couldn't even begin to figure out why until Enzai would give him a chance, which wasn't about to happen anytime soon.
Was she already dead? It didn't look like it, even if she was unusually pale.
Sick? Probably, considering she had been having health issues before this all started.
Then―
"Oi! Where the hell's your mind, hm?"
Shin snapped out of his daze, surprised to find mist all around him. He cursed swiftly and tried to get away, but it was too late. The blasted thing got into his body, and it was slowly burning his insides, of that he was sure. It didn't help that Enzai randomly popped out and slashed at him with that dagger of his, laughing madly and seriously giving Gaki a run for his money.
A sharp pain his back drew out a cry, causing him to collapse to the ground. Keiune flew feet away, but it didn't matter as Shin examined his new wound, breathing hard.
The bastard had stabbed through through him.
"Fuck you," he growled out, coughing out a bit of blood. Again, that insane laughter surrounded him as the mist vanished and Enzai reappeared, bloody dagger in hand, flipping it casually in his hand and giving him such a condescending look...
"You lost. Get over it."
Shin wasn't going to just sit there and die. Through willpower, he managed to push himself up and throw an uppercut at the bastard's jaw, using ice to shield his knuckles as an added bonus. He managed to dash away, backing up until he reached the Core's giant orb.
Trapped.
Looks like it really was the end.
Enzai reappeared in front of him again, seething, dagger ready to strike.
"Die, brat!"
Shin closed his eyes, bracing for the pain that would end it all. His body instinctively shook, but he knew he'd done alright. He bought time for Sasha, and the others were probably coming soon. Tohru and Alex made one hell of a team, after all.
The pain never came, though.
Some kind of warm liquid sprayed on him, yet it was the soft thud that made him open his eyes. He dared to look, blood running cold as he saw Sasha in front of him, shielding him...
... and having taken the fatal blow for herself.
Through miracles and willpower, she had moved, and continued as she brought out her sash, powering everything she had into it. He could see it, the way the sash glowed and seemed to grow. When she threw it, Enzai scattered into his mist form, and any stray particles were obliterated by Sasha's acidic water.
That was all she could do.
"Sasha!" he yelled, catching her body as it fell. Her onyx eyes had rolled back into her head, and she wasn't breathing. She wasn't breathing!
No... no, no, no... !
Oh, gods...
What was he supposed to do... !
"Tsk, tsk. Well, at least it'll go faster... "
Shit...
He needed to move...
He needed to protect her... !
Yet before Enzai could so much as plunge his dagger, an ever-familiar boomerang sliced through the air. If not for the murderous presence giving away his attacker, the undead demon would not have been able to mist away in time.
Shin felt his body shaking - both from blood loss and fear - as he listened to the approaching footsteps, the silence around them suffocating. Even Enzai was scared out of his mind, his hand visibly trembling...
Tohru Kiroi was livid.
Shin had never seen the soldier so angry, let alone even irritated. Yet the shadow his hair seemed to give over his onyx eyes made him far more intimidating than anything, and even the blond feared for his life. He tightened his hold on Sasha as Tohru stopped, facing Enzai, his boomerang reappearing in his hand in a flash of lights.
He did not move, did not smile, didn't even get in a battle stance.
This was Tohru, Captain of the Black Elite.
Tohru the cold-blooded soldier, who would stop at nothing to get his revenge.
"So you killed her... "
Shin jumped at the calm tone, the onyx eyes practically burning through Enzai's body.
"You killed her, and you think you're going to get away?"
"Tohru," Shin whispered, watching the soldier ready himself, boomerang armed.
"And you think you can kill me?" Enzai mocked, his trembling voice giving his fear away. "I'd like to see you try."
"... Fine."
Shin wondered if he was deaf when he heard the blast, eyes struggling to keep up as he watched Tohru leap onto Enzai, chains in hand and locking the demon's dagger in place. And the soldier only kept on going, using gauntlets as another weapon, molding and morphing the metal of his chain into spikes, and manipulating his boomerang with ease.
Enzai was taking several hits in rapid succession, far more than Shin had ever managed. Even Alex in his panic state had not managed this; and here was Tohru, still struggling with his lung injury, beating the ever-loving shit out of the demon.
The soldier was pissed... beyond pissed...
He was furious.
After a particularly hard hit from the boomerang, in which Shin swore he saw a protruding blade jam into Enzai, the demon had finally lost the energy to move. He was exhausted, cut almost everywhere, several deep stabs in his body. Tohru stopped in front of the bastard, and Shin unknowingly held his breath as he watched that chain.
"You're done already?" the elder man spoke, closing the chain together and morphing it into a double-edged sword. "What happened to that spunk? You still need to feel what you did to Sasha."
"You're sick," Enzai spat, red eyes glaring.
It was apparently a mistake. Tohru lashed out and kicked the undead boy across the room, onyx eyes still as cold as ever. He brought the sword up, murderous gaze as evident as ever. Shin was sure he should stop him, sure he should be healing Sasha to see if she really did have a slim chance...
But he couldn't...
Enzai deserved this, didn't he?
"Die."
"Tohru!"
Shin snapped his gaze to the exit, golden eyes widening as he noticed Alex. The guy looked awful, all things considered. It was obvious he hadn't been as lucky as Tohru, most likely dealing with the after effects of his powers. The blond had to curse when his friend noticed the girl in his arms, visibly saw him crumble when yellow-gold eyes widened.
He had to give the guy credit, though. Despite it all, he pushed forward and approached Tohru, meeting that murderous gaze with his own more tired one.
"That's... That's enough... "
"He killed Sasha," the soldier said, drawing his sword closer to Enzai. Shin noticed the demon was too frightened to even move at this point. "And you want me to let him go?"
"It's not... worth it... "
"He killed her, and you want to let him fucking go?!"
"Do you... honestly think... she'd want you to kill him... ?"
Alex had hit a nerve; Shin saw it, even with his light-headed haze. Tohru visibly shook, grit his teeth, even demorphed his chain. Finally, after all of it, Shin noticed tears trailing down the soldier's face, his form defeated.
"... Dammit... !"
Shin tensed as Alex approached, wondering vaguely when he'd even started. He loosened his grip on Sasha, letting the blue-haired boy touch her, chest tightening as he watched his friend gently caress her cheek.
A small spark from that accursed necklace caught his eye, and next thing he knew, he was no longer hurting as much. Alex had apparently been pushed to the edge, struggling to fight his own exhaustion as he supported himself. The blond was about to ask if he was alright until he realized the person in his arms was moving.
Moving!
"Sasha!" he whispered, holding her more securely, activating his healing almost instantly. She was barely breathing, pain all over her face as she struggled to move, onyx eyes slitting open.
"Sh... in... "
"Don't talk, dammit! Lemme heal you, 'cause Tohru almost flipped and Lex―"
Her hand on his startled him, especially when she managed to cut off his healing. Panic almost overtook as he struggled to restart, try to heal her, get her better... !
Yet he couldn't do anything when her lips covered his own, eyes widened as she squeezed his hand.
She drew away, pushing herself further up to his ear, and he could barely hear her breath. He didn't get why until she spoke softly, hot tears burning his eyes as they fell at her words, barely audible even over the silence of the Core's room...
And then she was lifeless once more.
...
How was he supposed to react to that?
It didn't matter when Tohru took Sasha's corpse, when Enzai misted out. It didn't matter when Yuri and Roan came, the priestess healing all wounds, and it didn't matter when Shin saved Alex from falling when he collapsed.
Sasha had died...
And he had never been able to discover his feelings for her until now...
"I love you, Shin."
"She's got nothing to do with this, you bastard!"
